doctor appointment

On Monday we took Oliver to the pediatrician because he's had a snotty nose for awhile and started coughing last Thursday. The doctor did a thorough exam, gave us a prescription for some medicine, and told us that Oliver's height is normal but he's underweight for his age. He also prescribed us some medicine for parasites since I recently found out that I have amoebas. For Oliver's low weight he recommended that we give him formula in the morning and at night.

I've always been of the idea that breastmilk plus a balanced, healthy diet is all that babies need, but Oliver's case may be different. He's slowly starting to accept the formula, so hopefully it helps to fatten him up! The doc also said that he should eat three substantial meals a day, which he does although he tends to eat mini portions and likes to snack between meals. Now I'm also working on giving him more substantial and healthy snacks so that he eats enough too. So that's all that's new for now.

daniel's in the same boat! well, he's not underweight, but his weight is much lower in the percentiles than his height (which is way up there.) the doc didn't say anything about formula, though she did recommend giving him whole milk. problem with d is, he doesn't eat finger foods, even at 16 months! everything has to be put in the blender or through a food mill, so it really limits what we can give him. he won't even eat bread. it's kind of frustrating.

good luck!

maybe you could put bread in the blender...with some milk. mmmm. pureed bread.

ok, at that point i guess hot cereal is easier.

Suze, I can't believe Daniel won't eat your home-baked bread! Oliver would be all over it. He adores bread! Yesterday, he ate little meals all day long. So I think I'm figuring it out: basically, he's like a little bird with a tiny stomach that can only eat a bit at a time. Yesterday for example after having pasta and a bit of soup for dinner he took his nighttime bath, and once he came out to the living room he saw the leftover pasta and said "más pasta¨so I gave another meal of more pasta with some jocoquí (lebanese style sour cream that he adores)on the side. So for me the new lesson is to have food available all the time!
